If you see a folder marked with a sad icon or an exclamation mark when you start your iPod and cannot access data, then it means a corruption has occurred in your iPod. Due to corruption, iPod fails to find data stored in the folder marked with the exclamation sign or sad icon.

Advice given by Apple in this scenario is that you charge the battery, or reset your iPod or restore iPod to its factory settings. But restoring you iPod will delete all your files and folders from your iPod. So it’s better to following measures to open your music files displaying the sad icon or exclamation point error:

1. Charge your iPod battery
2. Update with the latest iPod software
3. Reset your iPod
4. Check out if “Hold” button is off
5. Connect your iPod to a computer  port to check
